AAPL has been aware of POET since MS3 (i.e., before Jobs passed).

Steve's sister, the novelist Mona Simpson, was with him when he passed. She wrote about it: his last words were "wow! oh wow!"
Perhaps he was having a vision of Apple devices running on POET chips?
