In my humble opinion, there's no significance. POET does not build the VCSEL prototype to be a top performer in terms of GHz (although 50 GHz is quite a number), but rather

to demonstrate it can achieve these results with much less power thanks to GaAs' direct bandgap,
to demonstrate the VCSEL can be monolithically integrated.
