Internet of Things: Driving Technology Trends on System Scaling and Semiconductor Manufacturing Effectiveness

Presented by Lode Lauwers, Vice President Business Development, imec

To realize the promises of an augmented, connected sustainable world, promised by the Internet of Things, the IC industry faces significant challenges both at a distributed level, with the development of ultralow power sensor and radio technologies, as well as in the cloud, with huge computational requirements to store and process data. Moore’s Law has enabled today’s applications through a continuous cost reduction of transistors, resulting in more complexity, more functionality and higher performance of systems. However, many questions exist. Which materials, device and process technologies will we be able to bring to a ‘manufacturable’ level in order to keep that pace, and to allow for next generation process platforms to offer benefits to system designers? What measures are required for material and equipment R&D in order to bear the continuously increasing costs in a climate of growing consolidation? It’s a matter of scale and volume: will we have the products to generate sufficient volume in a sustainable way to realize the internet of things?
