Vcsel is commonly used in Lidar, collision avoidance, 50ghz is the frequency it operates at. This is different then clock speed of a processor. For instance RF waves for cell phones operate as high as 300ghz but that is not the clock speed of the CPU for the phone. The optics society said they expect Vcsels to replace the "hat" or beacon on Google self driving car.
