Great analysis, Fairchij!
As we all now, 28 nm silicon offers minimum cost per transistor, so GlobalFoundries' decision seems to be very smart.
POET's strive for 40 nm is also very smart, because 40 nm POET/PET …
- can compete with top-notch silicon,
- can be produced by more foundries than 28 nm can,
- can be produced on old and written-off equipment, lowering POET entry costs for foundries considerably,
- does not cannibalize on foundries' silicon production capacities at lower node-sizes, lowering the POET entry hurdle even more,
- is assumedly easier and faster to achieve than 28 nm (coming from 100 nm),
- does in no way rule out later downscaling to 28 nm and beyond.
