There are instruments out there that will image the chemistry pixel by pixel. Display an elemental map on a nanometer scale. They are called SEM - Scanning Electron microscopes and EDS Energy dispersive Spectrometers. Just about every University in NA has one or multiple instruments.
In fact, I noticed in a picture of the UCONN lab that Taylor has one. I believe it is a basic system but it is an SEM/EDS system.
BTW, I sell electron beam instruments, which can image down to the picometer level. 50 pm. 50 X 10E-12 m.
