Another option to power a watch would be an integrated GaAs solar cell. Geoff Taylor is said to have invented something, but I don't know any details.

As an aside, an even more efficient semiconductor material than gallium arsenide for solar cells would be uranium dioxide. However, uranium dioxide would not be suitable for semiconductor chips with their small structure sizes, because they would deteriorate by uranium's radioactive decay, even though the latter is very low.
