Message: Speed v. Acceleration

Hi folks. I've been busy at work and I haven't been able to read the board thoroughly, let alone post anything!

I did follow the SP daily and it is annoying to watch. I agreed with one post I read that suggested the drop in SP is probably due to the belief that significant news isn't likely to come until the end of the year. Let me stress that I agree that the sentiment exists, but not the belief that news will not come for a few more months. It could come Monday for all we know...

All these ups and downs are only possible because the market sees POET more as a stock than a company. An analogy I wrote about a while back still resonates with me, especially after all the developments we've witnessed recently. The analogy is speed v. acceleration and the feeling you get with each. Speed is something you become accustomed to and doesn't create any kind of feeling at all. You are certainly going somewhere, but there is no "rush". At this moment you are hurtling through space with the Earth at several hundred kilometres per second, yet there is no feeling to go with it.

Acceleration is different because it causes a change in speed and it causes a sensation you can feel. Once you have accelerated (or decelerated) to a new level of speed, the rush goes away and the new speed becomes the new norm.

I think the kind of investors we have now are the kind that crave the rush that a news release brings, but they aren't getting them frequently enough to sustain the price. The accumulation of developments doesn't equate to a "higher speed" to them, because once the news is digested they begin to feel accustomed to having the information and it no longer generates that feeling of going forward.

So having established that POET isn't accelerating enough for the retail investor, how about speed?

One speed indicator is the current SP. The SP was 20 cents a couple of years ago and we are now more than a dollar above that. Speed-wise, we have gone from creeping through a school-zone under construction to weaving through traffic on the highway! One day we will be doing warp speed on the Enterprise (IMO).

A better speed indicator (to me) is the accumulation of developments over the last couple of quarters. We have Ajit coming on board, the 100nm barrier breached, Synopsys praising POET and developing a PDK, a confirmed-but-unnamed foundry partner to get us to the 40nm "sweet spot", and the assurance of our interim CEO that our first NRE revenue is on track of Q4 with more in Q1.

So what will bring the constant acceleration we need to raise the SP to higher levels? In my opinion it will happen when POET is announcing partnership after partnership with names we all recognize. This equates to non-stop acceleration with no time to get accustomed to the speed.

In the meantime we have to endure a market that seems to have the ability to manipulate that feeling of speeding up and slowing down for their own ends. People will continue to question POET's validity even when the accomplishments listed above leave little doubt that we are on the verge of a breakthrough for the tech and the shareholders! I suppose that even when we’ve never had such momentum as we have now, the SP will dictate how we feel about our company.

I truly feel that when we finally have deals in place, POET as a force to change computing will be solidified and any concerns about POET's validity will be washed away forever.
