Gallium Arsenide vs Silicon - Cost?

I am quite certain that this topic has been covered in the past, so I do apologize in advance as it was likely before my time. But I thought I ran across something that said that GaAs was approximately 5X as expensive to produce as SI for semiconductor application? This would include cost of raw material through to production-ready. Is this true? And if so how does this impact the cost performance metrics? Thanks.
