"GlobalFoundries had previously told state officials that the factory would be built large enough to incorporate a new manufacturing process that would use silicon wafers that have a diameter of 450 millimeters, or 18 inches, rather than the current technology that uses 12-inch wafers".........

....In the documents that GlobalFoundries filed Friday with Malta, it does not specifically say that Fab 8.2 would be 450mm compatible.

However, in its documents filed with the town, the company does mention "new manufacturing technologies" that are the focus of some of its research and development efforts.
