As TechGC already pointed out, The Machine is no threat to POET at all. Maybe the chips it will run on will become some sort of competition, but perhaps not even that. I wouldn't be too surprised if HP eventually jumps on the POET bandwaggon having The Machine being "Powered by POET".

If HP would have their own cute CPU for The Machine, there will be some competition. But so what? Competition leads to innovation, which is a good thing. A fast HP Machine, whether being powered by POET or not, will, however, be a threat to other computer manufacturers, pressing them to become faster themselves. And that means: more potential partners for our little company!

And please notice that we have talked about speed only here, not about power consumption, which is even more important in my opinion.
