I believe this has to do with who is doing something with these materials.
Graphene is researched and hyped by mega-cap companies like Samsung and Apple. They will always have broad media coverage for their results – because they are big, not because they are production-ready.
On the other hand, according to common knowledge the applications of galliumarsenide are well-known, and the stuff is exhausted. Few care about a UConn professor and a small Canadian company claiming otherwise. That's the visibility hurdle small entities are facing.
More news from POET will help, but a) first there has to be something that can be published and b) the effect will be limited. Only once our first partner releases news saying something like "our next-generation chip will be based on the POET technology", then we'll fly.
