sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but unless you have physical share certificates, they've already got yours.
if "your shares" are held by your broker (they're the "street name"), you don't actually own them.
Your broker-dealer does.
You have a (CIPF-insured) claim against that portion of the broker's assets which the shares represent. For accounts over $1MM, some have further insurance (e.g., from Lloyds to perhaps $9MM)
if you don't believe me, call 'em up and ask 'em.
