I suspect Poet has actually produced a 100nm chip(or very close) but possibly the repeatability of the milestone is not where it should be so they can’t announce the completed milestone. My reasons for believing this:

-They have stated performance increases for 100nm compared to silicon (I know this could be modeled but would you put estimates in a NR?) In the NR when explaining performance they use the words “will demonstrate” not may demonstrate.

-They report they have hit 200nm, previously they were at 700nm-1000nm so they have made a significant leap forward. They are in the ballpark of 100nm.

-The timelines in the latest update are interesting. It is almost like they are saying they need the MBE machine cleaned before they can hit 100nm. It is possible the cleaning will produce a chip that has less impurities? Impurities will be more significant the smaller you scale down the technology. If cleaning the machine was not required to hit 100nm they could have done it after the 100nm milestone. The timelines are not definite because of the completion of milestone 5 and 7 but going off the CP, Milestone 5 & 7 should be complete by the end of Jan., the MBE needs 4 weeks for maintenance and cleaning so we are left with one month to hit 100nm. Not much time! They must be very close to hitting 100nm.

-Just imagine if Poet can tell interest companies 200nm is a lock, 100nm is so close we just need our equipment cleaned. As has already been theorized, I believe we will see a PDA agreement this quarter and possibly sooner than anyone could expect because Poet has now has proof this is scalable and the technology will work.

-In the latest NR they state regarding 100nm:

“The path to maintaining scaled operation down to 100nm has been identified”

“Significant progress has been made on the completion of this milestone”(note that in the update on milestone 5 & 7 it uses the same term “Significant progress has been made”)

-At this point in time the military side is great and will provide value but really everything hinges on 100nm. Lots of confidence in the last update NR, obviously management is pretty confident about where we are with the 100nm milestone. If it was uncertain they would not have been so bold in the latest update NR. For example:

“2014 being the major recognition year for the POET technology.”

“the Company will now change its focus from research to development”

“digital data processing at speeds of 100Gbps and beyond will become a reality”

“will demonstrate the greater than 50x speed improvement together with lower power consumption by a factor ranging from 4 to 10”

“We are encouraged by our ongoing discussions to date with potential partners”

“The Company intends to split monetization of the IP between multiple commercial markets and military applications and products to maximize returns of all the different aspects of the POET IP”

I think we are on the verge of turning the corner and never looking back.
