Here's a lapsed patent for POET:

Not sure if this is one of the ones that was dropped recently or if this one lapsed before the 34/7 count. You can see the lapsed status on the right.

My guess is that patents like these are supplanted by later inventions where the new invention perform teh same functions only better/cheaper and render the former obsolete.
