Not sure what you mean by software, Aves. Are you talking about the firmware? Or is it the GUI for the camera controls? Either way, I don't think POET or possibly even BAE (might be another 3rd party) would write the GUI or firmware for an IR camera.
Just to be clear, I never suggested that what was in the Optics article was POET. But if it was, or if a similar development based on POET was to be made in the future, BAE most certainly deserves credit for the final product. They would have used the POET process to make the pixels for the camera. The readout circuitry would be integrated, and obviously POET aswell.
The benefit for POET would be exposure, validation and revenue. But I think POET would be more often found with the foundries than the product manufacturers. The have stated on multiple occasions that they have no desire to be a chip maker, and i would extend that to products also. Going forward, POET would make lasers and modulators and transistors and even devices suitable for solar panels again - adding to the patent portfolio.
IMO this time next year the POET design team will be performing this function for an acquiring company.
