it's a key conference ... I'd expect the good Doctor or at least one or three of his lab partners or grad students to be there for visibility, legitimacy, and/or career "publish or perish" reasons. UConn *is* academia, after all.
also, the SPIE venue could be ideal for "behind closed doors" POET business dealings as well.
You think perhaps you'd get the calibre of licensee understanding & platform adoption focus of e.g. the Triquints or other fabs of the world by attending CES instead?
doing the wooing where there exists abnormally high concentrations of suitably lithsome wooees ... just improves on the probability of success.
