Union says shrinking nickel stock should force quick end to Vale Inco strike

Updated 53 mins ago

The United Steelworkers union says it hopes a strike at Vale Inco's nickel-mining operations in the northern Ontario city of Sudbury will be over quickly.

Steelworkers Ontario director Wayne Fraser says all of Vale's Canadian operations are now shut down, meaning the company's nickel inventory will quickly be depleted.

Fraser says he hopes this will force a quick resolution to the labour dispute.

Workers in Sudbury voted 85 per cent against the company's contract offer, while employees at smaller operations in Port Colborne, Ont., and Voisey's Bay, N.L., also rejected the offer.

In total, about 3,500 workers are now on strike.

At issue were proposals by Vale to exempt new employees from its defined-benefit pension plan and to reduce a bonus tied to the price of nickel.
