NickelQuest goes into classrooms across the province
The OMA's Mining Association´s virtual mine tour NickelQuest is being widely distributed in classrooms across the entire province. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Mining Matters program, which provides earth science educational resources and training to teachers, is sending out NickelQuest with its most recent newsletter to teachers and librarians.

"NickelQuest -- virtual mine tour -- is an excellent resource that will immediately capture the attention of kids of all ages," said Laura Clinton, Mining Matters Project Coordinator. "Through the virtual tour, students learn about modern technology, health and safety, equipment, careers, environmental stewardship and the importance of mining in our everyday life."

"Mining Matters is committed to distributing 10,000 copies of NickelQuest to reach every Junior, Intermediate and Senior school in Ontario," added Ms Clinton. "We are proud to be a partner in this important initiative."

The OMA project was initiated from the primary realization that it is logistically impossible to provide all Ontario students with the educational experience of touring an underground mine. The OMA took the route of using technology to create a virtual mine tour in order to take the underground mine experience to the classroom. The animation was produced by eSolutions Group, based in Waterloo, and the OMA Virtual Mine Tour Advisory Panel.

NickelQuest was launched in 2007 in Sudbury at Dynamic Earth´s Atlas Copco Theatre in front of a large audience, which included Grade 8 students from Jessie Hamilton and Copper Cliff public schools in the Rainbow District School Board. The students on hand, after seeing NickelQuest, expressed a new awareness for the safety aspects of mining, the products made from nickel and the varied career pathways the industry offers.

The PDAC Mining Matters newsletter for teachers "Groundwork" presents NickelQuest as a virtual mine tour suitable for Grades 7 to 9. "The video brings to the classroom the experience of touring an underground nickel mine in Sudbury. Created with technical accuracy, this resource is the product of consultations with educators and advisors sharing a history of involvement in natural resources, Earth science and mining education. Enjoy the film -- popcorn not included."

PDAC Mining Matters creates exceptional educational resources to met provincial Earth science curriculum expectations. Since 1994, this charitable organization has reached more than 400,000 teachers and students through resources that promote awareness of the importance of rocks, minerals, metals, mining and Canada´s geology. Mining Matters prides itself of building long-term partnerships with teachers by providing relevant, accurate and authentic Earth science resources for the classroom, designed by teachers for teachers.
