I can only guess that JP Gladu, as a board member with Noront, and a supporter of Indigenous equity ownership in large Canadian projects, has offered to help Matawa gain a controlling interest in Noront, and the Ring of Fire. If he has not then he is only selectively serving the best interests of Canada's First Nations, while ignoring others. I hope for Matawa's sake he has not forgotten about them, or stayed silent while watching their controlling interest in the Ring of Fire be marginalized. Instead, he should be, by all accounts, helping Matawa ushered into a new era of Indigenous equity ownership in this project of vast generational significance, and national importance.
JP should be advising all those involved, and seeking unity and empowerment among First Nations. If groups like Matawa and Mushkegowuk are allowed to fight, either internally, or between each other, they need guidance and intervention from such a person like JP Gladu. If not, than I can see no change in the status of our First Nations of Ontario. They will remain more dependent, than independent, as a people searching for self-governance and self-determination. They should not be allowed to so quickly satisfy their need for financial reconciliation by accepting brown bag offers from those who promise to take care of them. Without first going the distance to persue equity ownership, as JP suggests. Instead of satisfying they're short term needs, and then not considering the long run.
Therefore, if Matawa sees the Ring of Fire as a multi-generational opportunity they should treat it as such and seek to be substantial investors. Not short change themselves by standing on the sidelines. They should do whatever it takes to ensure, unlike in the past, that they are not taken advantage of by those whose interests are not aligned with theirs, and whose trust is questionable. In saying this I see JP Gladu as the only one who can convince Matawa that they have to seriously come together to push for equity ownership in Noront, and avoid being subjugated to that of a paid bystander. A bystander that watches as a foreign entity reaps the benefits of the resources from their lands, and then throws them a bone. Noront, I don't believe, would do the same.
If Matawa wants to be master's of their own destiny then they will have to pay the price of admission, and IMO JP Gladu can, and should, help them do that. If he does not, then his silence is not serving their interests very well...Which is worrisome, because I personally have not heard JP talk about the Ring of Fire much, and how it could benefit Matawa, or Canada for that matter. It always appears anything talked about is happening with the Indigenous groups in western Canada. As if those in Ontario, namely Matawa, don't exist..Nor is there any talk of First Nation investment in the Ring of Fire....I find that odd. What are they waiting for?....The only answer I come up with is .....the CANADIAN GOVERNMENT.
