 So the question here is why did he make such an offer knowing everyone would tell him to go find himself.

Every deal begins with a low offer and the lower you go the more of a change you will find a potential weak link in the chain where your offer will be considered.  It's all part of the game.  I'm sure these guys are experts in the art of deal making and they have a plan and a limit.
