With almost any issue there will be those who will oppose an idea or project offhand with no further discussion. They may also position themseves in an adversarial posture - for example in this matter by labelling Noront as an "opponent" rather than a proponent of the project. Alternatively , and/or additionally they may simply dismiss any objective analysis of information/data actually presented , or planned to be released , in order to maintain their ideological position. Despite that such individuals or groups are often the minority , they are not infrequently (actually usually) a very vocal minority , and not uncommonly have an undue influence regarding public discourse of a matter , and thus also with regards to influencing political decision-making.
That said, it will be interesting to see how this entire process unfolds, and to imagine/watch how Noront will repond strategically. If the process of public forums and group -specific consulations continues to meet unrelenting levels of opposition , a what point might Noront decide that future efforts with the Soo are pointless , and would they then initiate a parallel processs for the runner-up ferrochrome facility site (Timmins) , or would they simply resign themseves to the fact that shipping the ore out of Country for beneficiation elsewhere (mostly likely to a country with must less stringent work and environmental rules/enforcement) , would be the most viable decision?...
One might also envision a scenario wherein mid-way through the consultation process (i.e perhaps in 18 to 24months) , the city of S.S. Marie itself, decides to hold a plebicite on the matter...
