The city expected Noront to choose the site for its ferrochrome plant by now. The Sault and Timmins are being considered.

“But this is very dependent on the province,” said Provenzano.

The provincial government has yet to commit to a road to the Ring of Fire in remote northwestern Ontario. Until that pledge is announced, the second-term mayor expects no word from Noront.

“They’ve showed us a timeline, but they’ve told us the timeline is conditional and contingent upon the province making an announcement on the road,” said Provenzano.

He is hopeful the Progressive Conservative government will make such a declaration by this summer.
