Message: Coniston pushes back against chromite smelter

1. The new Chromite Smelter/Refinery would be built to modern standards not what Coniston residents remember from the previous century. Once this is fully explained residents will see the tremendos benefits of this plant being built in the Sudbury Area.

2. People remember the Sudbury area as a moonscape from the antiquated mining, smelting and refining methods utilized in the last century. This is no longer the case and the area has been regreened over the years. Vale and Glencore have spent millions on new processes and pollution in the area is much less now than in places like Toronto.

3. In spite of successful efforts to diversify the economy in NE Ontario and Sudbury in particular, the economy is highly dependent on mining and mining supply companies. Coniston residents will want their children to have jobs in Sudbury and not want them to leave the area to find work.

4. Al Coutts told the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce that concentarate from the ROF will be sent to Sudbury for Smelting. If I understood him correctly this means the concentrate will first come to Sudbury when it leaves the ROF and before it goes to the Ferrochrome Smelter/Refinery. So it makes absolutely no sense to send the smelted ore out of Sudbury for further processing. This leaves Timmins, The Soo & Thunder Bay out of the running.

5. Noront will be sold to a bigger company, likely Vale. Vale is in Sudbury and will be Smelting the ROF Ore in any event. It makes more sense to build the Ferrocrome processing plant adjacent to the Vale Smelter in Copper Cliff than to ship material accross town to Coniston. Coniston residents can go back to sleep. Vale has plenty of property on the west end of Sudbury.
