ATTAWAPISKAT - In your article titled “Government reluctant to rush Ring of Fire,” published Jan. 28, 2018, I read with surprise the statements that the De Beers Victor Mine was “rushed into development” and that government didn't want to make the same “mistakes that occurred when the mine was developed.”

The Victor Mine kimberlites were first discovered in 1987, followed by advanced exploration work and a feasibility study through 2002, then a comprehensive three-year environmental assessment that concluded in October 2005 with approval from the Ontario government, a full 18 years after discovery.

It appears the comments made are confusing the approval process for the mine with the timing of the release of government funds intended to support job training in local communities, as the government monies were not released until after the environmental approvals for the mine were granted by government, which then triggered construction of the mine.

There was no “mistake” regarding a “rush to develop the mine,” as the mine opened 21 years after discovery.

Head of External and Corporate Affairs, De Beers Canada
