By means of the RFP, NRCan is seeking proposals from suppliers to design and carry-out large-scale furnace tests at the kilogram-scale, and perform a critical review of furnaces used in the direct reduction of iron and simulations of two (2) relevant furnaces for assessing their applicability and use on direct reduction of chromite.

The period of the Contract for Requirement 1 shall be from date of award to March 31, 2018.

Ferrochrome Smelting Test Work on Ring of Fire Chromite and Sampling of Dusts/Fumes and Slag (NRCan-5000033217)

To design and perform ferrochrome smelting tests to generate dusts, fumes and slag that will represent various electric arc furnace conditions. The outcomes of this test work will (1) provide dust, ferrochrome and slag samples for use in advanced characterization studies aiming to determine the sources and conditions promoting the formation of hexavalent chromium, and to optimize furnace and operational conditions improving the quality of slag to make it inert, and (2) serve the broader needs of NRCan’s Chromite Project in identifying clean technology options for producing marketable ferrochrome alloys from the Ring of Fire chromite ores.
