Last Trading Date 2016
The last trading date for 2016 for Canadian publicly traded stocks will be Friday December 23rd in order to record the gain or loss in the 2016 taxation year. Canadian stocks purchased or sold after December 23rd are settled in 2017, so any capital gains or losses on sale apply to the 2017 tax year instead of to the 2016 tax year. The Canadian stock exchanges, such as the TSX, are closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day (Dec 26th and 27th, because Dec 25th is a Sunday).
The last trading date for 2016 for US publicly traded stocks will be Tuesday, December 27th. The US exchanges, such as NASDAQ, NYSE and CBOE, are not closed for Boxing Day
