Oh, C.D. Howe, we need you now!

In need of a minister

C.D. Howe was the wartime "minister of everything" and MP for Port Arthur.

As the Ring of Fire opportunity slides into oblivion, it appears that it will join eHealth, Ornge and Oakville gas on the list of massively botched projects. Quite clearly absent among current political leadership are vision, judgment and competence.

Musing on the current mess, one recalls a time when political leadership in Northwestern Ontario was held in special esteem and respect. I refer to the 22 years when the Port Arthur riding was represented by Clarence Decatur Howe.

C.D. Howe was a dynamic and successful private entrepreneur who, rather than seeking further riches in the private sector, choose to serve his adopted country in her time of need.

He was the Member of Parliament for Port Arthur from 1935 to 1957. Known as the “Minister of Everything,” C.D. made enormous contributions to winning the war and to rebuilding Canada in the post-war period.

By instinct and training C.D. was a careful engineer with a strong focus on clear and coherent plans. However, he was, after thorough analysis, ready to take risks. Indeed he had a special flair for difficult tasks, and successfully managing same with his highly talented team.

C.D. famously backed his team and they in return gave him loyalty and support, a relationship that lasted as long as he lived. I believe that C.D and his team would have relished a chance to take on the Ring of Fire.
