From the above article:
There is still much more work that can be done on this topic. The Neskantaga First Nation community had a similar experience to that of Attawapiskat’s. Chief Wayne Moonias’ daughter, Charla, had to leave her community because the mental health counselling that she required wasn’t available in her community of 300. To this day she still lives outside of the community, attending school nearby. Situations like this are all too common in small aboriginal communities across Canada. Even though many communities experience issues with mental illness, most small ones do not have the resources needed to combat it. The Canadian government and aboriginal communities are working towards universal access for mental health care, but they just aren’t there yet.

Here's where it gets more interesting.....in this article...
"Wayne Moonias is a councillor of Neskantaga but six years ago he and his family had to make a tough decision to leave their community.
“My family had to be uprooted to Thunder Bay because our 16 year old daughter had a medical issue… We made a decision as a family that they needed access to proper care in an urban centre like Thunder Bay. My daughter has three doctors she has to see regularly in Thunder bay just to maintain [her health]. That was a difficult decision for our family to make.”
Band councillor Wayne Moonias and his family were forced to leave the Neskantaga First Nation because his daughter's medical condition requires care she can't access in the community. (CBC)
Moonias and his family return to Neskantaga every summer. He wishes that everyone in his community had access to the same services he does in Thunder Bay"
Comment:
Mental health issues are something I do not like to criticize or poke fun at, having lost someone very close to me to depression many years ago. But, in this case I would have to say that what I know about mental health problems is that they do not disappear with the changing of the seasons. Especially, if they are longstanding and require constant professional help and intervention. Taking an individual away from such help, and returning them back to a place where the possible source of the mental stress began is never advisable. Doing so most often puts the individual back to square one, and defeats the purpose of providing the constant attention to the individual's mental health in the first place. Until an individual can understand the source of the mental health issue they should not be left alone with it, or where is resides.
Wayne Moonias, a past councillor, and now Chief of Neskantaga, I do not think has shown a quality in himself that tells others that he has the right to be Chief. For I don't see him being too sympathetic toward others, but more so concerned about how as Chief he and his family as Moonias' have become so special. Sure... the rest of the reserve could also benefit from the services offered in Thunder Bay, but dear Wayne only appears to acknowledge this in spoken word....devoid of action. Now tell me.... How can a "Chief", who says he is so concerned about the well-being of his people, tell them blatantly that only he and his family are worthy of such care. That the rest of them can find their own solutions to their mental health and addiction problems on their own, and that bringing such services to Neskantaga is not an option. Please.....Wayne's World from where I stand is not about his people, but only about spending the reserve's money for his own personal gain.
How about taking some of that money the reserve receives there Wayne and giving some of it to the people of Neskantaga, so that everyone can be a part of Wayne's World.
