Mining an important part of our city

Follow us!
With mining week in full swing, a special luncheon was held at the Davedi Club to talk about the industry – something that has had an important role in North Bay.

As part of North Bay Mining Week, the Canadian Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum – Northern Gateway Branch, hosted a luncheon at The Davedi Club on Tuesday, May 10 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Boart Longyear is sponsoring the luncheon that will feature Tim Bremner, Senior VP of North America International & President of Foraco Canada, as the guest speaker.

Mayor Al McDonald said the mining industry has been and continues to be an important part of the city of North Bay.

“The mining sector is incredibly important for our country, for Ontario and when you look at the city of North Bay,” he told NorthBayNow.ca “We have 65 related mining companies here in our community. It is a significant economic driver for us. They are high skilled jobs that pay extremely well, and we have real champions in the mining sector that headquarter their companies in town. A number of mining companies with thousands of employees across the world and their headquarters are here and we should celebrate that and show our support for them.”

At the luncheon, the Mayor read a proclamation that this week be North Bay Mining Week and whole-heartedly give his support for the mining industry.

He also said the coming talks about the Ring of Fire would be beneficial and that he supported the development.

“It’s a once-in-a-generation-find that can really turn the fortunes of our Province around. North Bay can play a significant role as well as the companies here. From the mining related companies here to the ONTC it is something that both levels of government should get behind as soon as possible and as a city we’re very supportive of the Ring of Fire and we will work with the Province and the Federal governments to do whatever we can to make that happen.”

“Many great speakers came out yesterday at the CIM North Bay Mining Week lunch,” McDonald said. “Leaders in the mining industry gave background on where mining is heading. I would like to thank all the mining companies in our city that choose to headquarter here and do business around the world. Proud to Proclaim May 9-13 as Mining Week in North Bay. We have 65 mining related companies in our city and they are an economic driver not only locally but globally as well.”

“On behalf of Foraco International, we are pleased to see that Mining Week is “going strong” in North Bay especially given the challenging market conditions we are experiencing. Mining Week is key to promoting awareness of an industry that has evolved into a responsible and sustainable part of our economy. Like many other mining service companies, Foraco is happy to call North Bay home” says Senior VP – Foraco International, Tim Bremner

Tim Bremner has more than 30 years of experience in the international exploration drilling industry. He was born and raised in North Bay and began his career in the drilling industry in 1973 as a summer student for Longyear Canada. After graduating from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering in 1981, he joined Boart Longyear and held several senior management positions between 1990 and 2006. Tim is currently the President of Foraco Canada and Senior Vice-President – North America for Foraco International. Tim is a member of the Board of Directors of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) and the Board of Directors of Workplace Safety North (WSN).

North Bay Mining Week celebrates the important contribution the mining industry and the companies based in North Bay make to our economy. Through a variety of events and keynote speaker like Tim Bremner, Mining Week spreads awareness of the industry while building a foundation for future economic growth.
