"Matawa CEO David Achneepineskum wants Ottawa to recognize the Ring of Fire as a priority infrastructure project for Canada."
Cliffs spent about $500 million ....and walked away
Noront spent somewhere in the neighbourhood of about $500 million...has encurred much debt...and currently trades at a fraction of what they spent....and have been waiting years for permits, which are being held up
Other companies have spent money up there as well....KWG, BMK, UC, PRB and others
The Ontario Gov't put $1 billion on the table; but has yet to spend any of it
We have committees....and consutants...and Bob Rae (who was suppose to be a voice for the natives)
Gov'ts are spending millions in education and studies
The federal government has billions in the budget to deal with aboriginal issues
It seems the last we heard from Matawa....we got this...
"Plans by Noront Resources to buy Cliffs' chromite assets in northern Ontario's Ring of Fire mining area are a "barrier to future opportunities" and a "threat to aboriginal and treaty rights," say First Nations chiefs opposed to the deal."
"The Matawa Chiefs Council, representing the eight First Nations closest to the proposed mine sites, went public Wednesday with plans to stall the deal before it is finalized."
And now....they want to know why the feds won't commit funds?
At this point, I think a gesture of good faith is in order.....a united committment from the natives...speaking as one....that they are 100% behind this project.
That....and that alone....is what it will take to move this from....will it ever happen....to...a top priority
