Sudbury letter: Budget snubs Northern Ontario

The Liberal government in their 2016 budget have continued to do what they've done for years -- ignore Northern Ontario. In his budget speech, Finance Minister Charles Sousa failed to mention the North at all, not even once.

In the 346-page document itself, Northern Ontario is glossed over with little to no reference. The only time there is any serious mention of Northern Ontario is the third re-announcement of the Ring of Fire funds. The same funds that remain untouched and unused.

That's right, the Ring of Fire is such a priority to the Liberal government that they won't even spend a single dollar. It's one thing to break a promise; it's another to break it three times over.

The lack of mention of the North by Minister Sousa is not a mistake. This is the same government that's held photo-ops for Northern programs in Barrie and Richmond Hill.

Northern Ontario's infrastructure is suffering from the lack of attention Premier Kathleen Wynne and Minister Sousa have provided -- just look at the Nipigon bridge debacle for example.

This third announcement of the Ring of Fire funding is not "third time lucky" for the North; it is rather an indication of what the Wynne government thinks of Northern Ontario -- not much!
