P.E.I. finance minister encouraged by meeting with counterparts

'I did hear some of the things I wanted to hear'

P.E.I. Finance Minister Allen Roach is confident that a new federal infrastructure program will have some flexibility following a meeting of finance ministers in Ottawa.

Roach wants the provinces to be able to spend the money in areas they feel will best grow the economy.

He said there are no timelines yet on when the money will come, or how much P.E.I. will receive, but he is encouraged by what he heard.

"I did hear some of the things I wanted to hear," said Roach.

"We never really got down to a lot of the details. But I did hear from the federal minister that there is going to be flexibility in the spending."

Roach is optimistic the money will start to flow once the P.E.I. government submits documents to Ottawa of plans for projects.

He said the ministers also discussed the framework for enhancing the Canada Pension Plan. He said they want to ensure it is relatively modest in the way to move forward, phased in over time, and fully funded.

Roach noted there was also discussion about the Canada Child Benefit program. He believes it will roll out by the middle of next year.
