OT but relevant. Little background, here in definitely "have not" New Brunswick, a company has been trying for years to get a Moly mine in production and after numerous studies, EA's, etc. the majority of First Nations have come out strongly against the project. This prompted a letter in the local rag and I post it for what its worth. rj
Pay property tax if you claim ownership.
We have people and societies who claim special rights to parts of Canada. I have the right, bought and paid for, to a small property in Fredericton. For 40+ years I have maintained this right by paying property taxes to the city and province, as the people around me have done as well. Now it seems that some people and organizations are claiming the right to control lands and minerals for which they seem to have never paid a cent in taxes. If they honestly believe that they have a right to these properties, why have they not reported ownership for the years (centuries) they claim and paid the appropriate taxes? That would unquestionably establish their rights. The assessment of property value might jump when valuable minerals are found, but their right to revenue from the property would have been established, especially if they now offered back-taxes from Confederation to now, with appropriate accrued interest. Otherwise, let them push, pull, or get out of the way. Or are the rest of us second-class citizens? S.M. Fredericton
