I think you are exaggerating a bit re 300, but agree whole heartedly with the remainder.

When Trudeau left our debt was 170 billion $s, which was followed for a short period by Turner and Campbell and they left us with 200 billion.
Mulroney fought a campaign of reducing debt but by the time he left it was 600 billion.
Martin first under Chretien and later as himself tried to reduce it by having us pay for it but we ( the spending teenagers) did not like it and turfed him out.
I also state the above from memory.
