Message: Wynne vows to push Harper on Ring of Fire

...The premier, who is heading to Ottawa on Dec. 5 and hopes to get a meeting with Harper, said she is not overly discouraged by his remarks last week.

“I’m not going to get caught up on one statement that was made on one particular day. I believe that it’s in the best interests of this country that the Ring of Fire be developed . . . there are deposits of minerals in the ring of fire that can be an economic boon for northern Ontario, for Ontario and in turn for the country,” Wynne said.

“I hope that the comments he made last week are not indicative of a lack of understanding about how important this project is for the whole country.”

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called on Wynne’s government to make public the arrangements it made with Cliffs in May of 2012.

“Cliffs Natural Resources decision to indefinitely suspend operations in the Ring of Fire is a serious blow to the province and the public has a right to know if the government held up their end of the agreement,” said Horwath.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak was frustrated about the suspension of operations by Cliffs, particularly at a time when factories, such as Heinz in Leamington, are closing.

“This could have been what the oilsands are to Alberta,” he said of the Ring of Fire.
