Job Description

Reporting to the Project Manager, The Director of Engineering manages the schedule, cost and delivery of all engineering activities related to project delivery.


Specific Responsibilities/Essential Functions


•Plans, directs and monitors all aspects of the engineering function including financial accountability, schedule management, EPCM and consultant/contractor adherence to reference designs and performance specifications.


•Reads, reviews and approves/modifies designs and/or drawings to ensure engineering standards and procedures are adhered to during all phases of project delivery.


•Develop, with the Project Manager, the design management plan (DMP).


•Builds, directs, manages and/or guides staff and contractor/consultant project teams to achieve program milestones and deliverables, consistent with Cliffs Capital Investment System (CIS) and project quality standards.


•Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with all stakeholders involved in project delivery.


•Creates and maintains an attitude of leadership towards all stakeholders and the project team with respect to overall management activities to achieve a quality project, while respecting the established budget and schedule objectives.


•Delivers engineering outcomes from Feasibility through commissioning and transfer to Operations within scope, on budget and on schedule, in accordance with good project management practices, in compliance with Cliffs CIS and applicable municipal, provincial and federal codes.


•Manages complex project issues and risks, facilitates effective conflict resolution, and communicates with internal and external stakeholders and manages their expectations.


•Recommends and implements appropriate corrective action plans where variances in engineering plans occur, and communicates with all involved stakeholders.


•Prepares and monitors Cliffs’ strategic goals and objectives, including engineering, reference design review, technical performance specifications, document control, budget and work breakdown structures, project schedules, resource prioritization, and staffing requirements.


•Manages activities within budget allocations and schedules, including timely reporting of financial and performance results and any significant cost, security, safety, human resources or project management issues to the Project Manager.


•Keeps abreast of industry activities and technological developments related to areas of responsibility. Implements performance metrics to ensure accountability of project deliverables.

Desired Skills & Experience

Education/Experience Requirement

Education:


•Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline


•Professional Engineer registered in the Province of Ontario


•Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus


Experience:


•Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in capital project management and implementation, including at least five (5) years of experience managing large (>$1B), complex, multi-year projects.


•Mining and furnace project experience preferred


•Experience with modular/pre-case/pre-assembled construction activities is desired.


•Comprehensive knowledge of current engineering and construction principles, methods and practices.


•Sound knowledge of capital project planning and management concepts and practices, with a proven record in delivery of large, complex, multi-year projects


•Extensive experience dealing with various stakeholder groups in the mining, resources and construction industry.


•Sound judgment and analytical and problem solving skills for formulating solutions to complex issues.


•Experience in alternate project delivery strategies.


•Leadership skills, including interpersonal, presentation, communication, negotiation, and consensus building, and ability to manage a diverse group of project specialists and consultants to accomplish the goals of the agency within established scopes, schedules, and budgets.


•Proficiency in the use of project management software and office computer applications is essential.


•Must have a valid Ontario “G” Driver’s License.
