B-Jay; for your info, the Alaska Highway was built in 1942 and work commenced early March and was completed just 9 months later in October 1942. I was stationed in Whitehorse with the RCAF for 3 years from 1962-1965 and made the trip on the highway several times. At that time, the only pavement on the Canadian portion was the 43 miles or so from Dawson Creek to Fort St. John, now it is all paved. The original highway was about 1322 miles. I heard many stories such as, when they hit muskeg and trucks loaded with fill were just allowed to sink and more fill was just dumped on top of them as they continued in their quest to get the job done, money was no object. As an aside, the US govt. paid for the entire highway and when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, the USA knew they had to get that highway built asap to protect that portion of their Pacific coast. rj
