“So when you are using that much power obviously it's a big part of your cost structure, so we've got to work out whether we can justify having that furnace in Ontario.”
"The prefeasibility study will also need to include plans for an all-weather road, potentially as a precursor to a railway, linking the mine site to existing Ontario rail lines."
“You don't want a private road up there, you want public infrastructure.”
These are the key quotes in my opinion.
Previously I was harping about locating the smelter in Nakina or even if a road were to be extended to the Ring, in the Ring itself. That would have solved a lot of the transportation costs ( not hauling of raw ore ) and particularly the natives would be most happy due to more jobs in close proximity and we all must know what a headache they can be if not satisfied.
However the large amount of electrical power needed is a heavy decision maker on the location.
So Ontarion government has TWO expensive decisions to make and Soon - not only the road but an electrical power line of sufficient capacity.
I say the road will have to go in but the power line they will forgo and Cliffs will have to go with one of the three current choices.
I disagree about private road. Ontarion government would like a private road to save them the cost but it is not the politically correct thing to do. A private road would likely mean that the natives would join forces and up in arms storm all the companies in the ring and Toronto Parlament buildings. No no, that can not be.
The rail line can be built by Cliffs with help from Noront and charge a user fee there after.
I think that the pipe transportation scheme that Noront proposed was mainly an effort to reduce it's share of the rail line's cost. i.e. We do not need it so we should not pay as high a portion.
p.s. We divert to less relevant topics when there is not much to talk about relevant ones as . I find that quite acceptable provided the less relevant ones do not crowd out the really relevant.
Hope most of you feel the same.
We need an active forum and that sometimes needs less relevancy. The not so relevant of course should be in the 'Off Topic' on the left side of the Agoracom web page.
Cheers to all. Ed G.
