Obviously when looking at these numbers, it would appear that the logical location would be Nakina first and SSMarie second............
Comparing the costs between these two locations.
1)Nakina $0000
2) SSMarie
1 carload =$3,500
1 -100 car train = $350,000
5 trains per week = $1,750,000
52 weeks per year = $ 91,000,000
I believe the numbers talked about in the past, was it would take 3 tons of chromite to get one ton of Ferrochrome. Also assuming that SSMarie was the closest point of entry(USA) to get the ore to the customers.
However if you smelted the ore in Nakina you would still have the shipping cost to get the ferrochrome to SSMarie approx $30miilion
So smelting the ore in Nakina would save you approx $60 million per year,
You would also require fewer locomotives and cars.
So based just on these factors, Nakina would seem to be the most logical location.
As an added plus to using Nakina is the First Nations people--- work force.
There is the Aroland Reserve right there not sure of population 300-400??? (Nakina Girl
would you help us out?) Plus Marten Falls --Webequie and a few others.
One thing to remeber if looking at the other three locations is there will be extra transportation costs, once the product has been smelted and the Ferrochrome is to be shipped to the USA. Timmins being the most expensive followed by TBAy and then Sudbury.......again depending on where it is going in the USA.
One final location that is only rarely discussed is at McFaulds lake itself.
Your transportation costs, locomotive and car supply would be reduced substantially.
WITH ONE DRAW BACK
Which leads us to the next issue which is Electricty.
WHERE ARE YOU HERB????
How much do we need to run the smelter??
Where can we get the power needed??
What is the cost per mile to run a power line etc???
I know Nakina at present cannot supply the required Megawatts.
Could TBay--Timmins-- SSMarie or Sudbury ---?????.
I know they are working on a couple of dams on the Jackfish river (approx 80 miles west of Nakina) however I am not sure how much they will produce. If they could get the power from their it would be relatively simple to run it along the CNR rail line to Nakina.
So from my simplistic thinking, again depending on electricty issues, and where the ferrochrome is going to be shipped into the USA,
Here is my order for the smelter
McFaulds Lake--Nakina--SSMarie--Sudbury--Thunder Bay--Timmins.
