Letter from Michael Gravelle
I asked for an explanation on rules concerning anyone selling or export of raw chromite and some other stuff during the FWR battle. Unions and residents are now campaining to have Ontario process but with everything, its all in the negotiations, for the best for everyone to be decided and some will always not like the results.
Thankyou for your email regarding the sale and export of chromite in Canada....As an investor you may be aware that some of the companies that are exploring for chromite in the McFaulds Lake area are concidering a full range of development scenario's including the possibility of constructing a ferrochrome smelter. To my knowledge these plans are preliminary at this time and it has not been determined that such a facility would be constructed in Ontario. My ministry and this government will certinatly work diligently to ensure that Ontario benifits from any such activity.
As per attached, the mining act states all ores shall be treated and refined in Canada. However, the ministry has authority to determine what constitutes a treated or refined product and to exempt a mine from provisions of this section. Permission to export semi-prossesed material has been granted in the past and may be granted again subject to specific conditions...Section 91...1,2,3,4
