Water pollution is definitely not an issue as it is pumped back along a parallel pipe thereby minimizing useage, eliminating any discharge and allowing far less restrictive water sourcing. When time comes to shut it down permanently a procedure is put in place to clean the water as necessary. The pipeline represents good planning, lessening the infrastructure costs to Noront to the disadvantage of all who want to ride on their coat tails. I would put it along a minimal road, just good enough for servicing the mine. More cost containment!
