ALong those lines, I'm wondering that there IS a major in the sandbox. They know about the deposit, and more than we do. They want the resource bad. but they dont want a fight.

What if the BOD et al have been courted by this major, and things are being put in place for a takedown. the majpr gets the deal with little fight because all the 'inside' dudes are in on it.
