I love a good generalization. They answer all questions don't they? But perhaps they are a little over-simplistic. Your above mentioned point is true, except it's like stating that all governments control their countries. The question is one of why and more importantly how do they control and the motivations for doing so. Likewise, what are the motivations for why one holds a stock. A shorter holds them for decidedly different reasons than a long. I think you can easily extrapolate from this that how they deal with the sale of their shares will be likewise vastly different. So yes, the shareholders control the market price but as in the above, they also have different ideas about what they wish the sp to be at a given point in time.... and some have greater means to influence it than others.
