Actually you can go all the way back to the early 60's for a comparison, to the coal fields of SE British Columbia. The rail line in was built by CPR mainly to service their own coal holdings there, but were forced to also move product from 3 smaller operations at rates that were dictated by others. Their only answer was to take out the smaller plays rather than subsidize them.
