Mining for diamonds and chromite are not the same, open pit or not.

Dimonds mostly involve sifting the diamonds out out of the material.

Metal mining I believe always involves a chemical process of some kind. Many of such chemicals are the problem because they often end up as part of water and soil contamination. It often is a matter of time and degree as to whether it occurs.

Metal mine closures now almost always invole costly clean up afterwards.
