My first experience with -50 below (ambient) was discovering that diesel congealed at -43 C. We used old gravity fed 'diesel' heaters in the tents and someone (the junior) would have to run out several times a night to heat the 45 gallon drums of diesel with with a large propane torch so that the diesel would flow.
Similarly, pity the drill hand that would let the heaters or pump on the water lines for the drill run out of fuel. If either stopped the water lines to the drills would freeze solid in a few minutes and would have to be hauled back to camp to thaw out. 100' sections of water line/hose full of ice are not pleasant to handle and if you were pumping 1/2 a mile that was a lot of hose. You knew that things were not going to be pleasant in camp when you walked into the dry and found hose piled everywhere. On those days us lowly geologists stayed out of the drillers way.
Aah the memories.
