Message: Some Misfit Comments on Today's FWR Press Release

Thank you for correcting that statement concerning US tax rates. I should have conditioned it with holdings in foreign or world assets as a resident for tax purposes in the US.

What I mean by resident for tax purposes is a non-US citizen who spends enough time each year to the point where the IRS wants to tax them on their wordly earnings. I believe it is 183 days the first year and declines on subsequent years. This mostly affects Snowbirds as we call them in Canada who travel south for the winter. Most want to spend time in the US but hold considerable RRSP (similar to 401Ks) to allow them to build wealth sheltered from taxes until they are 65.

The tax advice I was given when I was considering a move to the US was to tranfser my locked in pension account to dividend or income paying investments rather than those that increase in equity. The reason provided to me was that if I held foreign assets while living in the US and while being taxes by the IRS, then any increase in those assets was considered taxable capital gains for the year the gain was achieved, regardless of whether I had sold them or not. Mind you, this was a decade ago so things will likely have changed since then.

The one area I have have seen discussed by either party (not that a NR should be a tax course) is the one concerning the applicability of capital gains exemptions (for Canadians) after the tendering of shares to a US based business or corporation. To me this is the number one tax implication for non-professional investors.

Fortunately, Noront is 100% Canadian so tendering shares to Noront will not bring about issues.

Thanks for the correction and information. We are all learners on here.

M1.
