Most precious and industrial metals rose yesterday, building on recent gains as the dollar extended its losses. Gold prices, however, finished slightly lower as investors collected some profits. Gold for December delivery settled at $966.30 (U.S.) an ounce in New York, off $3.40.

Platinum and palladium rose on news unions are planning a strike at South African power utility Eskom, having already been lifted earlier in the week by positive July car sales data.
