In Manitoba today is called Louis Riel Day. This is the 2nd year. It is a general holiday like New Years Day, Victoria Day, Canada Day etc. The legislation to introduce it ensured that it overides existing union contracts so people do get the day off regardless if it is in their contracts. Having said that, people working under federal government regulated businesses do not get it off. That includes banks and railroads etc.
